Repair of the waterproofing on an amorphously shaped underground car park ceiling

One of the 12 most modern buildings in the world at that time, according to the British Guardian, was officially opened in November 2005. The PHAENO was built within 4 years and confronted the builders with special construction challenges. The architecturally complex building could only be realised by using state-of-the-art building materials such as self-compacting concrete and special moulds.

Completely unexpectedly, the entire waterproofing had to be renewed in 2009 - 2010. One of the decisive reasons was the massive moisture problems in the underlying underground car park.

At the beginning of 2009, our experts in Aurich were asked by the investor to develop a concept for the permanent waterproofing of the total area of approx. 28000 m². The requirements for the coating system were not insignificant with the creation of a functioning, high-quality and seamless waterproofing with the ABP spray elastomers and a liquid plastic surface, as above all the surface design with a "natural quartz gravel covering" was specified. Here, the architectural design posed a special challenge, which was realized with UV-resistant 2-component polyurethane systems.

A specialist company needed about 1 year - partly with encapsulation of partial areas in winter time - for the renewal. A complex system structure was used consisting of waterproofing layers underneath and above the surfaces that could be walked and driven on.
